The Abundance of Avocado in Kalimpong 🥑 From Hill Gardens to Handmade Soap

There’s something beautiful about the way seasons announce themselves in Kalimpong. Around the end of September, when the mist begins to lift and the air turns gentle and cool, you know it’s avocado time. The trees that stood quietly all year suddenly hang heavy with green, pear-shaped fruits creamy, rich, and full of goodness.
In these hills, many homes have their own kothey bari small kitchen gardens lovingly tended to by families. And among the guavas, lemons, and chilies, you’ll almost always find an avocado tree or two. Once planted, these trees begin to fruit in about three years, rewarding the patient grower with baskets of buttery avocados.

A Little Bit of History
It’s believed that avocados made their way to Kalimpong during British colonial times, when the British introduced several exotic fruits and plants to the Eastern Himalayas. The climate here mild, misty, and fertile proved perfect for the fruit to thrive. Over the years, it quietly became part of local life, passed down from garden to garden, until almost every neighbourhood had at least one generous tree.

Where to Find Them
If you’re visiting Kalimpong during September, October, or November, head to Haat Bazar on a Wednesday or Saturday morning. Local farmers bring their fresh harvest often picked that very day and you’ll find piles of avocados in all shades of green. The best ones come from these homegrown trees, nurtured without chemicals, just mountain rain and sunshine.

Goodness Inside and Out
Avocados aren’t just delicious; they’re a powerhouse of nutrients rich in vitamins E, C, and B6, along with healthy fats that nourish the body and the skin. These same qualities make them a natural ingredient for skincare hydrating, softening, and deeply restorative.
That’s why I love using fresh avocado pulp in my handmade soaps. Each batch is blended with care the creamy green pulp adds richness and moisture, making it perfect for dry or sensitive skin.
